A problem most referring physicians faces is that often times they cannot count on getting consistent results from their sleep diagnostic providers. Sometimes, it may take days to get a patient’s result back but more often than not, it may sometimes take weeks. The problem is structural. Given the shortage of sleep physicians and technologists, it is not uncommon for these physicians and technologists to work in multiple lab environments. Sometimes through sheer serendipity a study could be read while the physician happens to be at the lab at the time. When one misses the physician, then the processing of the patient may go from days to several weeks. The problem is further magnified when the patient is due back at the referring physician’s office for a follow up consult. This is when chaos kicks in. The manager typically calls the sleep lab demanding the results of the patient when the study is not even scored yet. This does not imply that the lab is poorly run or has a bad clinical practice. This merely happens as a result of a shortage of resources- sleep technologists, sleep scorers, and sleep doctors.

The patient’s cycle time (time a patient is scheduled to the time the results is given back to the referring doctor) are monitored very closely. A benchmark of 5 working days is set and enforced.
