When CMS was debating whether to reimburse for ambulatory study last year, most sleep labs were terrified of the prospect that it will lead to the demise of their business. There are a select few, however, who chose to embrace home sleep testing and actually integrated it with their business model.

Today, the few labs that chose to embrace the new paradigm are actually thriving. The fear that business will be taken away by home sleep testing actually had a reverse effect on what actually happened.. Since the business paradigm is different, most labs today who embrace home sleep testing need to work very closely with home sleep testing companies like Home Sleep Solutions and outsource the entire process. Although the clinical model of by-passing a titration study and going straight to an auto PAP seem feasible, in reality, the need for titration study in a full service sleep lab is the preferred clinical pathology. The doctors who ordered the home sleep test basically used the first test as a screening mechanism for the second test.

Recent studies have revealed that the vast majority of patients would prefer a home sleep test and never instead of testing in a sleep lab. Thus, there can be a high cancellation rate in any sleep lab environment. The initial home study provided the patient a mechanism to “tip toe” themselves in arena of sleep diagnostics testing.

The sleep labs who embraced the home sleep testing model actually saw a net increase in the number of titration studies within their labs.

The same labs also saw a net increase in the number of referring doctors (Primary Care Physicians) and dentists (the forgotten group).
